A healthier approach to clinical trials evaluating resveratrol for primary prevention of age-related diseases in healthy populations

For an outcome measure which resveratrol treatment produces a large effect in a pathologic individual, it is expected to show a smaller effect in an already healthy individual. In healthy individuals, highly responsive outcome measures (left) will show a large response to an optimal physiologic stimulus (e.g., high intensity aerobic exercise, caloric restriction), but may have a smaller, yet detectable response, to resveratrol treatment. However, outcome measures which are minimally responsive to such optimal stimuli in the healthy population would be expected to have an undetectable response to resveratrol treatment.
