Figure 1. Diversified downstream effects of autophagy. Autophagy plays an important role in energy homeostasis and quality control of macromolecules at the basal level or occurs during long-term exposure to oxidative stress. On the other hand, in response to acute cytotoxic stresses (e.g. oncogenic stress), autophagy might contribute to the expression of some proteins together with epigenetic transcriptional regulation.
