Naked mole-rats maintain healthy skeletal muscle and Complex IV mitochondrial enzyme function into old age

Figure 3. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) of naked mole-rat skeletal muscle. Naked mole-rat skeletal muscle tissue was fixed in glutaraldehyde and sectioned in preparation for TEM. Samples from each age group (adolescent, A-B; young adult, C-D; aged adult, E-F) were viewed in a blinded fashion. No obvious differences in ultrastructure are observed between samples. Specifically, no signs of age-related pathology such as autophagy or abnormal mitochondrial morphology are observed in any sample. Both intramyofibrillar (IMF) and subsarcolemmal (SS) regions are shown. Scale bars signify 500 nm.
